Nuance and Sun Stone by Paula Nadelstern for Benartex.

Have you seen these? Nuance and Sun Stone by Paula Nadelstern for Benartex.

I couldn't wait to get my needle into these gorgeous fabrics.
Hand quilted detail was fun to do.

Using my Fat-Quarter Scrap-bag™ pattern
I stitched up this clutch bag in about 30 minutes!

Now I have to say that I am not a 'glitzy girl' BUT
if I was this would be the perfect candidate for
some beading or crystals!

Photo below shows the back of the clutch, complete
with woven Scrap-bags™ label.

View below shows the coordinating lining along with the
magnetic snap closures.

The Sewing Machine Project - mending communities . . .

While sewing and listening to a podcast of etown this morning, I learned of this project with the following mission, "The mission of the Sewing Machine Project is to give people a tool that will not only help them mend their own lives but also will give them a way to take an active role in the rebuilding of their community."

Donations of sewing machines, fabric, patterns, notions, and other sewing-related items are welcome!

I hope you will take a moment and check out the opportunity to give back or pay it forward, by visiting The Sewing Machine Project Website and taking action. My own donation of patterns will ship tomorrow.

Email the Sewing Machine Project.

If you decide to make a donation, I love for you to send us a comment and let us know that this project has touched your heart.

What We Did with Winnie's Mother's Fabric Scraps.

Back in March of '08 I posted about a quilt top that I had made from fabric scraps that I had purchased at my neighbors estate sale.
You can read that post here . . .

Well, the other night at the art quilt opening (see previous post), Winnie Johnson brought the finished quilt in to show me and now I'd like to share it with you. Photo above holding the quilt left to right: Winnie Johnson, Myself, and Loretta Stacy.

In a nut shell, I purchased vintage fabrics from Winnie many years ago, they were her mother's scraps. I pieced the quilt top using the vintage fabrics for the hand pieced hexagon flowers and machine appliqued them to newer fabrics from my stash. When the top was finished I sent it to Winnie. She had it quilted by Loretta and finished it herself.

Below, Winnie is showing Loretta the documentation text she added to the edge of the quilt. It reads: "Grandmother's Flower Garden Variation...Pieced by Jamie Kalvestran Using Ruth Aanerud's Scraps...Quilted by Loretta Stacy...Finished by Winnie Johnson."

I asked Winnie how many of the fabrics she remembered from her childhood. It was amazing how many memories it brought back. Even her husband Russ pointed out a fabric that had been formerly a pair of culottes that Winnie wore when they were first dating! How cool is that!

And even though I had never met Ruth, (Winnie's mother) in person, I hope she is looking down from above, smiling and nodding her approval of what we did with her scraps!

Russ & Winnie Johnson operate Woodland Cottage a Textile and Craft Retreat in Elk River MN, read more about Woodland Cottage here.

Loretta Stacy owns The Needle's Eye a Longarm Quilting Business, in Princeton, MN. You may email Loretta here.
